Karen Armstrong: The Golden Rule for the modern world

Karen Armstrong, a provocative, original thinker on the role of religion in the modern world, highlights the need for the global community of the world to put into practice the Golden Rule of compassion.

People want to be religious, says scholar Karen Armstrong; we should help make religion a force for harmony. She asks the TED community to help build a Charter for Compassion - to restore the Golden Rule as the central global religious doctrine.

Why you should listen to her:

Religious thinker Karen Armstrong has written more than 20 books on faith and the major religions, studying what Islam, Judaism and Christianity have in common, and how our faiths shaped world history and drive current events.

A former nun, Armstrong has written two books about this experience: Through the Narrow Gate, about her seven years in the convent, and The Spiral Staircase, about her subsequent spiritual awakening, when she developed her iconoclastic take on the major monotheistic religions - and on the strains of fundamentalism common to all. She is a powerful voice for ecumenical understanding.

Armstrong's 2008 TED Prize wish asks us to help her assemble the Charter for Compassion, a document around which religious leaders can work together for peace. In late fall 2008, the first draft of the document was written by the world, via a sharing website.

In February 2009 the words of the world were collected and given to the Council of Conscience, a gathering of religious leaders and thinkers, who are now crafting the final document. The Charter will be launched in November 2009.
"I say that religion isn't about believing things. It's ethical alchemy. It's about behaving in a way that changes you, that gives you intimations of holiness and sacredness."

Quotes by Karen Armstrong

  • “Look into your own heart, discover what it is that gives you pain and then refuse, under any circumstance whatsoever, to inflict that pain on anybody else.”Watch this talk »
  • “If we don’t manage to implement the Golden Rule globally, so that we treat all peoples, wherever and whoever they may be, as though they were as important as ourselves, I doubt that we’ll have a viable world to hand on to the next generation.”Watch this talk »

Salman Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education

Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script - give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help.

Why you should listen to him:

In 2004, Salman Khan, a hedge fund analyst, began posting math tutorials on YouTube. Six years later, he has posted more than 2.000 tutorials, which are viewed nearly 100,000 times around the world each day.

Salman Khan is the founder and faculty of the Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org) - a not-for-profit organization with the mission of providing a free world-class education to anyone, anywhere. It now consists of self-paced software and, with over 1 million unique students per month, the most-used educational video repository on the Internet (over 30 million lessons delivered to-date). All 2000+ video tutorials, covering everything from basic addition to advanced calculus, physics, chemistry and biology, have been made by Salman.

Prior to the Khan Academy, Salman was a senior analyst at a hedge fund and had also worked in technology and venture capital. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an M.Eng and B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, and a B.S. in mathematics from MIT.

Sir Ken Robinson: Bring on the learning revolution!

In this poignant, funny follow-up to his fabled 2006 talk, Sir Ken Robinson makes the case for a radical shift from standardized schools to personalized learning -- creating conditions where kids' natural talents can flourish.

Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson challenges the way we're educating our children. He champions a radical rethink of our school systems, to cultivate creativity and acknowledge multiple types of intelligence.

Why you should listen to him:

Why don't we get the best out of people? Sir Ken Robinson argues that it's because we've been educated to become good workers, rather than creative thinkers. Students with restless minds and bodies -- far from being cultivated for their energy and curiosity -- are ignored or even stigmatized, with terrible consequences. "We are educating people out of their creativity," Robinson says. It's a message with deep resonance. Robinson's TEDTalk has been distributed widely around the Web since its release in June 2006. The most popular words framing blog posts on his talk? "Everyone should watch this."

A visionary cultural leader, Sir Ken led the British government's 1998 advisory committee on creative and cultural education, a massive inquiry into the significance of creativity in the educational system and the economy, and was knighted in 2003 for his achievements. His latest book, The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, a deep look at human creativity and education, was published in January 2009.
"Ken's vision and expertise is sought by public and commercial organizations throughout the world."

Gever Tully challenges the perception of today's parents about child safety and offers valuable advice for preparing children to be truly safe.

Yasir Qadhi: "Walk the Talk: parenting our children by purpose and by example"

With every blessing comes great responsibility, and one of our greatest blessings is children. We all want righteous children, but if you are going to "talk the talk" but not "walk the walk", your children will see through that and will never find a good role model in you!

The Story of Change

Hiba's blog has the pleasure to introduce to you "The Story of Stuff" project and their new video -
"The Story of Change: why citizens (not shoppers) hold the key to a better world"

(Disclaimer: Please, note that the speaker in the video is not a Muslim and thus is not dressed according to Islamic guidelines for women.)

For details on statistics and other information mentioned in the video, you can view Annotated Script for the Story of Change.

About "The Story of Stuff" project:

When Annie Leonard and her friends at Free Range Studios set out in 2007 to share what she’d learned about the way we make, use and throw away Stuff, they thought 50,000 views would be a good result for her ‘20-minute cartoon about trash.’ Today, with over 15 million views and counting, The Story of Stuff is one of the most watched environmental-themed online movies of all time.

Annie founded the non-profit Story of Stuff Project in 2008 to respond to tens of thousands of viewer requests for more information and ways to get involved. We create short, easily shareable online movies that explore some of the key features of our relationship with Stuff—including how we can make things better; we provide high quality educational resources and programs to everyone from teachers and people of faith to business and community leaders; and we support the learning and action of the over 350,000 members of the Story of Stuff community.

The Story of Stuff Project is proud to be fiscally sponsored by San Francisco’s Tides Center. We are supported by grants from private and public foundations, revenue from speaking appearances and DVD and book sales, and contributions from people like you.

Please help us keep our films and other content free by making a secure, tax-deductible on-line contribution today.

Join "Save Maryam" campaign!

Up to 2 million people are walking away from Islam in Indonesia every year. Detachment and disillusionment has left them feeling that Islam is out of touch with the lives of the contemporary Indonesian. Furthermore a seemingly exciting, well-resourced and apparently empowering faith is reaching out to them; Christianity. The word of Christ today is one of love, peace and most importantly – answers. These are answers that young people have not been able to access from the Islamic establishment, until now. Young Indonesians have yet to discover the beauty and the essence of Islam that strengthens us Muslims worldwide.

Thus Maryam is the voice of every young Muslim in Indonesia that is struggling with the pressures of contemporary life, does not know Islam more than the name they were born with and finds solace only in a growing voice of Christianity. We want to stop Maryam becoming Mary, by reaching out to her, dealing with her concerns and helping her find peace with her religion and with Allah’s (swt) decree. We want to save a generation that is heading toward leaving Islam, from doing so, and we need your help. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Allâh supports His slave as long as the slave is supportive of his brother…” (Muslim), so help yourself, by helping to Save Maryam.

We either accept that Islam has had its time in Indonesia, and allow the growth of apostasy to continue. Or, we reach out, with faith, to our brothers and sisters in Indonesia and put a hand on their shoulder and remind them of who they are; Muslims. Stand by their side and educate them about the Allah (swt) they do not know and the Messenger (saw), whose name they may have, but whose life they have no knowledge of.

Consider the words of the Messenger of Allah (saw) and get involved:

“A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah (swt) will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah (swt) will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah (swt) will screen him on the Day of Resurrection.” (Bukhari)

Family Comes First - Nouman Ali Khan

Before we can preach the message of Islam to our family, we must establish a loving relationship with them. The Messenger (saw) said "The best of you are those whom are best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family." "(Ibn Majah)
